FAQ

What is the Pace Writing Center?
The Writing Center NYC offers one-on-one interactive tutoring. We help students develop as independent writers and critical editors of their own work.

Where are you located?
Pace Writing Center NYC is located on the second floor of the Birnbaum Library, in the library’s southwest corner. From the front doors of the library, go up the steps, then turn left. At the end of the hallway, we are on the left. Our address is E207 Birnbaum Library.

What do I need to bring when I meet with a tutor?
We ask that you bring a draft of whatever you are working on. That could include just an outline or the first paragraph, but have something written when you arrive.

Do I need to make an appointment?
Sometimes. Check with the receptionist for our appointment hours and our walk-in hours. Generally, we run appointment-based Monday through Thursday and walk-in based on Friday and Saturday in the Fall and Spring semesters. To schedule an appointment, call 212-346-1085.

What are your hours?
In the Spring and Fall semesters, our hours are as follows:

  • Monday through Thursday 10 AM to 6 PM
  • Friday and Saturday 10 AM to 3 PM

Hours are subject to change. Check with the receptionist at the Writing Center for our current hours.

How does a tutoring session work?
You come to the writing center with a piece of writing. We talk to you about the assignment. We work through the piece—generally sentence by sentence, or element by element (if it is an outline or brainstorm)—and talk with you about individual aspects of the paper’s writing. We do not offer suggestions in terms of content or ideas. In other words, we are there to help you say what you want to say, not to add our own ideas to your paper.

Do you edit papers?
Absolutely not. We do not edit students’ work but practice a hands-off responsive approach to tutoring writing needs in any discipline. We will listen to you read and talk about your work and offer feedback in terms of its organization and grammar, for example.

Do you work with ESL students?
Absolutely! Many of our writing center clients are students in ESL or ELI courses, and we are available to work with any Pace students.

I am an instructor at Pace. Can you visit my class? Can we visit you?
Yes to both. Email the Writing Center NYC Coordinator, Agie Markiewicz (amarkiewicz@pace.edu) to schedule a class visit. We are available to talk about any issue related to the writing process, and can tailor a presentation to the concerns of your classroom.

You are also welcome to schedule a tour of the Writing Center, as well.
